The recent outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in northern Ghana has raised alarm, leading to the loss of 14 lives in the Upper West Region, with reports of suspected cases now surfacing in the Upper East Region.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Health Promotion Officer from the Talensi District Health Directorate, Salifu Yamusah, emphasized the severity of the disease, noting that CSM can be fatal if not treated promptly. He explained that the disease primarily affects the spinal cord and brain, and its progression can lead to a rapid deterioration in health. Symptoms to watch out for include severe headaches, neck stiffness, confusion, and a general feeling of unease. Additionally, individuals may experience a dry throat, a symptom that requires urgent medical attention.

“CSM is a very fatal disease. It easily kills because it affects the spinal cord and the brain. So if you are at home and you are experiencing symptoms like headaches, neck stiffness, uneasiness, or confusion, you need to go to the hospital,” Mr. Yamusah advised.

He highlighted that health authorities have intensified educational campaigns to prevent infections. While no cases have been reported in the Talensi District yet, the district’s health directorate is increasing public health education efforts, particularly at outpatient departments (OPDs). “In the Talensi District, as of now, we have no suspected cases yet, but we are intensifying our education,” he noted.

The focus remains on raising awareness about the symptoms, preventive measures, and the importance of seeking medical attention at the earliest signs of illness. Mr. Yamusah also clarified that laboratory tests for CSM cannot be conducted at home or in pharmacies, stressing the need for individuals to visit the nearest health facility for proper diagnosis and treatment.
