The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in the Upper East Region has called on the public to support a 30-year-old mother, Patience Akanzeriwe, who gave birth to quadruplets on Valentine’s Day.

The Authority’s appeal coincided with its visit to the Pediatric Ward and Newborn Care Unit of the Upper East Regional Hospital, where members shared chocolates and cocoa drinks to mark the National Chocolate Day celebration.

Led by Regional Director Wisdom Ahadzi, the team spread joy among sick children and newborns while also drawing attention to the plight of Patience and her family. The new mother, who comes from an underprivileged background, faces an uphill battle in caring for her four newborns alongside her four other children.

She and her husband, both peasant farmers, are struggling to meet the demands of their growing family, especially since the quadruplets were born prematurely at just 25 weeks.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Ahadzi stressed the urgent need for collective support for the family, emphasizing that such humanitarian gestures reflect the true spirit of love and kindness that Valentine’s Day embodies.

“This is a mother in need, and we cannot turn a blind eye. The birth of these beautiful quadruplets should be a moment of joy, not despair. I am appealing to individuals, organizations, and philanthropists to come forward and assist this family with basic necessities like baby food, clothing, and medical care,” he urged.

Beyond the call for support, the Director also highlighted the significance of Chocolate Day, which coincides with Valentine’s Day and serves as a platform to promote Ghana’s cocoa industry.

“We brought chocolates to the children so that they, too, can feel the love. When you’re in the hospital, it’s easy to feel abandoned or lonely, but little acts of kindness like this can bring joy and reassurance,” he stated.

Under this year’s theme, “Eat Chocolate, Be Healthy, and Grow Ghana,” with the sub-theme “Chocolate for All: Taste, Share, and Get Rich,” the initiative underscored the health benefits of chocolate consumption, including its ability to improve heart health and brain function.

Dr. Bertha Gibil, a pediatrician at the hospital, echoed the director’s appeal, stressing the need for urgent help for the quadruplets.

Hospital Administrator Samuel Azure Atuba also expressed gratitude to the Ghana Tourism Authority for its benevolence, calling for more such visits to uplift the spirits of patients and their families.
