Former MCE criticizes Upper East MPs’ individualistic lobbying for slowing regional development

Rex Asanga, the former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Bolgatanga, has expressed concern over the lack of collective lobbying among Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Upper East Region, which he believes has hindered the development of the regional capital, Bolgatanga.

Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Asanga highlighted the disparity between the approach of MPs in the Upper East Region and their counterparts in the Upper West Region, emphasizing the need for a unified strategy to address the region’s developmental challenges.

Asanga noted that while MPs in the Upper East Region focus primarily on securing resources and projects for their individual constituencies, they often neglect the broader goal of advancing the regional capital.

“Each MP does what he or she can to secure resources for their constituency without considering the collective goal of the region,” he stated.

He cited examples of MPs from Bawku and Bongo who, according to him, are less inclined to collaborate with the Bolgatanga Central MP to lobby for the development of the regional capital.

In contrast, Asanga praised the MPs of the Upper West Region for their collective approach, which has yielded significant developmental benefits.

“Their MPs, both in the past and even now, have a collective voice, but ours do not. It is unfortunate, but they need to start thinking about how the regional capital can develop,” he remarked.

Asanga’s comments underscore the urgent need for a shift in mindset among Upper East MPs. He called for greater collaboration and a shared vision to prioritize the development of Bolgatanga, which remains underdeveloped despite its status as the regional capital.
