Robert Atiah, Proprietor of Golden Step School, has emphasized that teachers should not be excluded from matters concerning children’s well-being and behavior, highlighting the crucial role both parents and teachers play in the academic and social development of children.
Speaking on A1 Radio, he stressed that parents should actively engage in nurturing their children’s self-esteem and perseverance at home. He believes it is the responsibility of parents to provide the right encouragement and discipline, ensuring that children develop the mindset to succeed while avoiding behaviors that may negatively impact their academic and social lives.
“At home, the duty of the parent is to make sure the child is monitored and given a sense of self-esteem. The child should receive encouragement and training to develop perseverance and achieve success while avoiding behaviors that could hinder their academic and social life.”
He pointed out that while teachers have distinct responsibilities within the school environment, their role extends beyond the classroom. He emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration between parents and teachers to address any differences in a child’s behavior at home and school.
“The teacher in the school must liaise with the parent to compare the child’s behavior at school with their behavior at home.”
A key aspect of Mr. Atiah’s argument focused on the benefits of reinstating the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) system in schools. He suggested that the PTA could serve as a vital platform for improving communication and collaboration between parents and teachers, ultimately enhancing students’ educational experience and supporting school infrastructure development.
By reintroducing the PTA, Mr. Atiah believes the education system could see significant improvements. “Bringing back the PTA is one of the key steps that I believe will contribute positively to our education system,” he added.
