People’s National Party urges government to prioritize gender inclusivity

As Ghana celebrates International Women’s Day on March 8, 2025, the People’s National Party (PNP) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize gender inclusivity in his cabinet reshuffles.

The party emphasizes that women have been instrumental in Ghana’s development, excelling in financial management and playing a vital role in the agricultural sector.

Despite their significant contributions, Ghana has yet to appoint a woman as Minister of Finance, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, or Minister of Agriculture. The PNP argues that this oversight not only undermines women’s contributions but also hampers the country’s agricultural potential.

In a press statement signed by Janet Asana Nabla, Chairperson and Leader of the People’s National Party, the PNP urged the government to adopt a gender lens in all appointments, ensuring that women hold at least 30% of leadership roles across all sectors. They believe this is not only a moral obligation but also a necessary strategy for sustainable growth.

“Research highlights that women excel as managers of finances and play a pivotal role in our agricultural sector. Yet, it is disheartening to note that Ghana has yet to appoint a woman as Minister of Finance, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, or Minister of Agriculture.”

“As we celebrate this year’s theme, ‘Accelerate Action for Gender Equality,’ the PNP calls upon President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize gender inclusivity in his cabinet reshuffles. It is time for a paradigm shift in our leadership.”

According to the PNP leader, instead of establishing a new Women’s Development Bank, the government should leverage the existing Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) to support women entrepreneurs and small-scale traders.

“We believe that empowering women is not just a moral obligation but a necessary strategy for sustainable growth. Furthermore, while the President has promised to establish a Women’s Development Bank to support women entrepreneurs and small-scale traders, we encourage a more pragmatic approach. Instead of investing resources into creating a new bank, the PNP suggests leveraging the existing Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), which was founded for such initiatives.”

This approach, she believes, would streamline efforts, eliminate unnecessary expenditure, and ensure that women receive the support they need without delay. The PNP reiterates the need to accelerate action for gender equality, emphasizing that by empowering women and recognizing their contributions, Ghana can create a more inclusive and sustainable society.
