President John Dramani Mahama has assured the people of the Upper East Region of their fair share of national resources, emphasizing that the region is close to his heart.
During his thank-you tour in the region, President Mahama expressed gratitude to the people for their overwhelming support in the 2024 general elections, both presidential and parliamentary.
The president’s speech was in response to calls from the chiefs of the region for developmental projects. The Paramount Chief of the Nangodi Traditional Area, Naba Kosom Yelazoya Asaga II, speaking on behalf of the chiefs, reiterated the urgent need for an airport to enhance transportation, trade, and economic development in the region.
In response, President Mahama pledged to prioritize the development of the region, highlighting several key projects, including the completion of road infrastructure, upgrading and expanding the region’s road network to facilitate trade.
He also mentioned plans to improve health infrastructure, construct the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam, build an airport, and develop the Bolgatanga Sports Stadium.
“I pledge to the people of the Upper East Region that when the national cake is being shared, you will receive your fair portion,” he assured.
Prior to the president’s arrival in the region, Alagumgube, a group of individuals from the Upper East Region, had already begun work at the proposed airport site. Members of the group mobilized resources to clear the abandoned runway, using earthmovers and graders to re-gravel the site.
Speaking after the president’s remarks, Gabriel Agambila, the founder of the group, expressed excitement about the president’s comments on plans to galvanize resources for the construction of the airport through public-private partnerships, including mining companies operating in the region.
He urged the president and his government to follow through on their commitments, emphasizing that within the next six months, the government should begin visible work at the site. According to Mr. Agambila, the group will continue its advocacy and efforts to appeal for the construction of the airport.
