Aisha Adams, the Municipal Nutrition Officer for the Bolgatanga Health Directorate, has emphasized the crucial role of nutrition in the management and prevention of tuberculosis (TB). She highlighted the importance of building a strong immune system, particularly since a weakened immune system makes individuals more susceptible to TB.
“Nutrition plays a critical role when it comes to TB management,” she stated.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Madam Adams noted that people dealing with TB need to focus on maintaining and gaining weight through a nutrient-dense diet. She advised incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables into daily meals, as well as ensuring an adequate intake of proteins, vitamins such as zinc and vitamin A, and additional energy through healthy fats.
“With the food they eat, they need protein, and then they need vitamins like zinc and vitamin A. They also need more energy,” she explained.
The nutrition officer stressed that good sources of fat, such as those found in fish and lean meats, are essential, while advising against consuming the fatty parts of meat. She reiterated the importance of hydration, recommending ample water intake to help flush out toxins from the body. Additionally, she emphasized that a balanced diet not only strengthens the immune system but also helps mitigate the side effects of TB medication.
Furthermore, Madam Adams encouraged individuals with TB to avoid excessive salt and sugar, as they can interfere with the body’s recovery process. She noted that by following proper nutritional practices, recovery from TB can be accelerated, and individuals will be better equipped to manage the disease effectively.
“If they are able to follow their nutritional needs very well, recovery becomes faster for them,” she stated.
“We all need to support nutritional efforts,” she added.
This discussion took place as Ghana joined the world in celebrating this year’s World Tuberculosis Day under the theme, “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, and Deliver.” The theme serves as a reminder of the collective effort needed to combat this global health challenge.
