The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has announced a series of government initiatives aimed at fostering development and inclusivity for the Muslim community in the region.

The minister made the announcement during his address at the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration held at the Mobil Park in Bolgatanga by the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah community.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to bridging developmental gaps in Zongo communities, Mr. Atanga revealed plans to facilitate the accreditation of Islamic schools, such as the Institute of Islamic Research, to train more Arabic teachers.

Additionally, scholarships will be provided to disadvantaged Muslim students pursuing studies in Law, Medicine, Engineering, and ICT, he said.

In a significant move to empower women, the government has allocated GH₵51.3 million as seed funding for the National Women’s Development Bank. This initiative is designed to offer tailored business support to Muslim women, enhancing their livelihoods, he underscored.

Furthermore, the establishment of the Soyaaya Fund will provide start-up capital for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in Zongo communities, stimulating economic growth, the minister noted.

The minister also highlighted efforts to improve the Hajj pilgrimage experience, noting a reduction in Hajj fares from GH₵675,000 to GH₵662,000. Additionally, a state-of-the-art permanent Hajj Village is under construction in Accra to ensure dignified accommodation for pilgrims, he said.

Addressing regional security concerns, Mr. Atanga called for collective action to combat violent extremism and substance abuse among the youth. He urged Muslim leadership to reinforce traditional communal security systems and promote moral upbringing.

The minister reiterated the government’s dedication to peace, particularly in conflict-prone areas like Bawku, and thanked the Muslim community for their support in the recent elections.

He concluded by extending Eid Mubarak greetings on behalf of the government and the chiefs of the region, urging continued unity and adherence to the virtues of Ramadan.

The event was attended by religious leaders, traditional rulers, and members of the Muslim community, marking a day of reflection and celebration.
