Journalist Samuel Mbura has voiced strong support for the construction of the Upper East Regional Airport, emphasizing its potential to drive significant development in the region.
He views the government’s commitment, as reiterated by the president during his recent visit, as a positive step toward realizing the long-awaited project.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr. Mbura expressed concerns about the polarized opinions surrounding the airport project. He noted that while the initiative has the potential to bring substantial growth, discussions about it often become highly emotional, with opposition frequently outweighing support.
He questioned why such a promising venture is met with resistance and speculated that political leaders might be contributing to the confusion to undermine the project.
“The airport is a non-negotiable project. We all know it is a priority for many stakeholders, and we are eager to see it materialize. However, my major challenge has always been that whenever the airport project is mentioned, it stirs up emotions. People begin to express divergent opinions, and the opposing views are always more than those in support. I keep wondering why this is the case,” he said.
Despite the challenges, the journalist argued that the airport should not be delayed in favor of other projects, such as road repairs, healthcare improvements, and water supply initiatives. He emphasized that development should not be a trade-off, urging authorities to pursue multiple initiatives simultaneously. He insisted that if funding for the airport is available, the region should seize the opportunity.
“If the government finds a way to secure funding for the airport through collaboration, why not? We should go for it while also fighting for other essential projects. We cannot say we must fix the roads first, improve hospitals first, or resolve water issues first before considering the airport,” he stated.
Mr. Mbura also commended the local development group ‘Alamgumbe’ for its proactive efforts in clearing the airport site, calling on others to support the initiative. Additionally, he urged the region’s 15 Members of Parliament to be held accountable and supported in bringing development to the area. He warned that prolonged debates and disagreements could hinder progress on multiple fronts.
“If we allow this project to be buried in confusion and endless arguments, we will lose it,” he cautioned.
