In a stunning turn of events, John Millim Naabwomya was on Wednesday unanimously confirmed as the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Talensi, despite facing protests leading up to the confirmation process. There is more in the following report.
Mr. Millim, who also serves as the Talensi Constituency Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), received a full endorsement from all 31 assembly members present and voting, an achievement unmatched by any of the other 14 nominees across the Upper East Region.
Of the 15 district nominees in the region, Mr. Millim was the only one whose nomination was publicly challenged. The day his nomination was announced, the Talensi NDC office was mysteriously razed by fire. The cause of the blaze remains unknown, with party officials unable to determine whether it was accidental or deliberate.
A few days before the confirmation, protests erupted within the constituency, led by a group of party members who questioned his loyalty to the NDC. The group alleged that Mr. Millim’s alleged close ties with members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) made him unfit for the position.
Despite these setbacks, Mr. Millim emerged from Wednesday’s confirmation with overwhelming support.
“I am very grateful to His Excellency the President and the rank and file of our great party and I pledge that by the grace of God, I will not fail you. I pledge to be free, fair but firm to everyone and I solicit your unflinching support and cooperation as we pursue the common agenda of bettering the lives of our people.”
“I want to particularly assure the traditional leaders, the people of Talenteng, the Member of Parliament, the Regional Minister, and the Regional Coordinating Council of my full corporation and collaboration so that we can collectively promote the overall wellbeing of the people in whose interest or welfare we seek this office and positions,” he stated.
In an interview with A1 Radio’s Joshua Asaah following the endorsement, he expressed gratitude and said the result represented “the voice of the district.”
“The picture painted out there by some few group of people, do not represent the vast of Talensi. The outcome of the election tells it all. 100 percent victory. Nobody was coerced. You were here and everything was free and fair,” he indicated.
Member of Parliament for Talensi, Daniel Dung Mahama, however, dismissed rumours suggesting the party office was set ablaze by disgruntled youth.
“Our party office was burnt down recently. People tried to allege it to the youth of Talensi, I resisted it. My white is my white and my black is my black. I didn’t see anyone burning it [so] why should I say Talensi youth? Anyone who says Talensi youth, I want to make it clear again, it is not Talensi Youth. Even Ministry of Foreign Affairs was burned down, the White House has also got fire problems. So please, let us respect the Youth of Talensi and desist from dragging our name in the mud.”
Meanwhile, the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, commended the confirmation and announced that the government has allocated GHS 100 million in allowances for assembly members. He said the move demonstrates the government’s commitment to deepening local governance and empowering the decision-making process at the grassroots level.
