Bolgatanga, Ghana – Mark Smith, Morning Show Host and Online News Editor for A1 Radio, has been named one of only two Ghanaians selected for the highly competitive Baraza Media Lab Data Storytelling Fellowship (Cycle 3), a continental program designed to strengthen the capacity of African journalists in data-driven storytelling.
The fellowship, hosted by Kenya-based Baraza Media Lab, brings together journalists, storytellers, and data specialists from across the African continent to explore innovative ways of using data to shape public discourse, expose truths, and influence policy.
Expressing his excitement about the opportunity, Smith said, “This opportunity means a lot to me—not just as a journalist and storyteller, but as someone passionate about using data to drive powerful, people-centered narratives.”
“I’m looking forward to sharpening my skills, collaborating with brilliant minds from across the continent, and most importantly, telling stories that matter—stories backed by evidence and rooted in the realities of everyday Africans,” he added.
With growing conversations around Africa’s development and identity, Smith believes that data storytelling plays a vital role in reshaping how African stories are told and received globally.
“Africa has always had stories. What’s been missing for too long is ownership of those narratives,” he emphasized. “It’s time we—Africans—begin to tell our own stories with clarity, nuance, and context. Data gives us a powerful tool to do that: to challenge stereotypes, influence policy, and shift perspectives.”
The Baraza Media Lab Fellowship runs in cycles and supports journalists and content creators across the continent to develop impactful data-driven stories, while offering mentorship, networking, and funding support.
Mark Smith’s selection for the fellowship highlights the growing recognition of Northern Ghanaian journalists on regional and international platforms and reaffirms A1 Radio’s role in nurturing voices that are shaping conversations both locally and continentally.
