The Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Navrongo has called on President John Dramani Mahama to urgently nominate—or renominate—a candidate to oversee the affairs of the Navrongo Municipal Assembly.
This follows the Assembly’s rejection of the President’s nominee, Madam Faustina Abulu, who also serves as the Women’s Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Navrongo Central Constituency.
At a press briefing held on May 27, 2025, at the NPP’s Navrongo office, the party’s youth expressed concern over the administrative vacuum and the potential developmental stagnation facing the municipality.
Speaking to journalists, the Navrongo NPP Central Youth Organizer, Daniel Bayivere, cited the Local Governance Act 936 (2016), emphasizing the crucial role of a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in managing the District Assembly, administering the District Common Fund, and steering local development planning.
“The absence of an MCE is a serious concern,” Bayivere stated. “The law is clear about the responsibilities of the MCE. Without someone in that office, key development projects and administrative functions suffer.”
Bayivere further lamented the internal wrangling within the NDC, which he blamed for the failed confirmation of Madam Abulu.
“While our side was working assiduously alongside the Kologo Naaba, Naaga Naaba, religious and opinion leaders, and other well-meaning citizens to ensure the nominee’s confirmation, NDC opposing factions were engaged in selfish political games, underhand dealings, and power struggles,” he said. “These actions eventually led to her outright rejection.”
An aspirant for the position of NPP Youth Organizer and a member of the party’s communication team, Mr. Donald Abowinum, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the urgent need for leadership at the Assembly.
“Navrongo is yearning for development,” Abowinum said. “We cannot afford to lag behind because of political disagreements. We appeal to the President to act swiftly and give us a leader who can steer the affairs of the Assembly.”
The NPP youth also made a direct appeal to the current Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Hon. Simon Aworigo, the former MP, Hon. Sampson Chiragia, and the NDC Constituency Executives to, as they put it, “soften their stance and eschew vindictiveness and aggressiveness” to facilitate a smooth confirmation process when a new nominee is presented.
“The people of Navrongo deserve unity and development, not division and stagnation,” Bayivere concluded.
It will be recalled that during the confirmation vote held on April 29, 2025, Madam Faustina Abulu secured only 14 out of 50 votes—representing 28 percent support—while 36 members, or 72 percent, voted against her.
