The Union of May Borns (UMABO), a vibrant social group made up of individuals born in the month of May, has brought joy and relief to mothers and their newborns across parts of the Upper East Region.
On Saturday, May 31, 2025, the union donated assorted toiletries and baby products to 65 newborn babies at four health facilities as part of their annual month-long celebration.
The donation, which targeted the Upper East Regional Hospital, Amiah Hospital, Bongo District Hospital, and Zebilla Hospital, was a key highlight of UMABO’s community-centered activities for the month.
Speaking during the presentation at the Upper East Regional Hospital, Vice President of the Union, Joyceline Abiire, emphasized UMABO’s commitment to giving back to society.
“Our goal goes beyond celebrating birthdays. We see it as a moral responsibility to support our communities in meaningful ways,” she said. “This year, our activities included a blood donation drive on May 17, indoor games at Ramsey Sports Stadium on May 25, and today’s donation to 65 newborns. The final celebration will be our ‘May Day’ bash at the Catholic Social Centre at 4 p.m.”
Each mother received a package containing essential baby items, including diapers, baby wipes, soaps, lotion, towels, and other toiletries.
The gesture was met with smiles and gratitude from both health workers and mothers, who described the intervention as timely and impactful.
Care providers at the various hospitals expressed heartfelt appreciation to UMABO for their consistent generosity.
“It’s not every day that we see groups come in with such love and compassion. This donation will go a long way to support mothers who often struggle to afford these items after delivery,” one midwife noted.
Since its formation in 2011, UMABO has grown into a family of 171 members. Over the years, the union has carved a niche for itself through impactful social interventions, especially in health, education, and community development.
