The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has pledged to address the pressing human resource challenges facing the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga.
During a working visit to the hospital, the minister sought first-hand insight into the operational core functions of the facility. He assured hospital management and staff of government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the region by supporting staffing needs.
“I will provide additional support to ensure that the facility has the necessary personnel to deliver quality healthcare services to the people of the Upper East Region,” the minister stated.
Hon. Akamugri emphasized that a robust human resource base is essential for effective healthcare delivery and regional development.
“As a region, we need quality human resources in the health sector. This will not only improve service delivery but also contribute to the expansion of the hospital and boost our local economy. It is our duty as policymakers to support health infrastructure and delivery. I understand the situation and will work with you to resolve these challenges,” he said.
The minister’s remarks came in response to concerns raised by the hospital’s Clinical Coordinator, Dr. Samuel Aborah, who outlined the operational challenges and staffing gaps affecting the hospital.
Established in 1946 as a small clinic, the Upper East Regional Hospital has evolved into a major secondary referral center, serving approximately 1.3 million people in the region and across neighboring countries. Despite its critical role, the hospital continues to struggle with limited resources and staffing shortfalls.

Dr. Aborah reiterated the need for increased government support to fully meet the health demands of the growing population.
The minister was also taken on a tour of the hospital to familiarize himself with its facilities, departments, and overall operational landscape.
This visit reinforces the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure in Northern Ghana, particularly in addressing the health workforce shortage in the Upper East Region.
