Regrethrophen Senior High School, a private educational institution located in Namoo in the Bongo District of Ghana’s Upper East Region, has been selected as one of 25 private Senior High Schools nationwide to participate in the pilot phase of the government’s Free SHS programme, beginning in the 2025/2026 academic year.

As part of the pilot initiative, these selected private schools have been included in the 2025/2026 School Choices Register, enabling Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates to choose them during the school placement process under the Free Senior High School policy.

Regrethrophen SHS, which provides boarding facilities, offers a broad range of academic programmes, including General Science, General Arts, General Agriculture, Business, and Home Economics—making it a comprehensive choice for prospective students seeking quality private education under government support.

Under the pilot programme, the government has proposed a GHS 1,500 tuition subsidy per student, per semester for those enrolled in the selected private schools. This initiative aims to expand access to secondary education, reduce overcrowding in public SHSs, and gradually phase out the double-track system that has characterized Ghana’s public SHS space in recent years.

The Free SHS pilot for private schools is part of a broader policy direction by the Ministry of Education to bridge the gap between public and private education, while fulfilling a campaign promise to integrate qualified private institutions into the national Free SHS framework.
