The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in the Upper East Region, in collaboration with the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), the Regional House of Chiefs, and the PANAFEST/Emancipation Secretariat, has announced plans to commemorate this year’s PANAFEST and Emancipation Day from 18th to 19th July 2025 at the historic Pikworo Slave Camp in Nania-Paga.
Themed “Let Us Speak of Reparative Justice – Pan-African Artistic Activism,” the two-day event seeks to celebrate Africa’s rich cultural heritage, foster Pan-African unity, and provide a solemn platform for reflection on the sacrifices made by ancestors in the fight against slavery and colonial oppression.
The celebration will bring together a diverse group of participants, including local residents, diaspora communities, tourists, and key stakeholders in Ghana’s tourism and cultural sectors.
According to Wisdom Ahadzi, Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, the celebration is not only a tribute to the past but also a call to action for the present and future.
“This is not just a celebration; it’s a moment of reflection and renewal. We aim to connect the past to the present, honoring the ancestors while shaping a future that resonates with unity, justice, and peace for all people of Africa and its diaspora,” said Mr. Ahadzi.
The Pikworo Slave Camp, a site of deep historical significance, serves as a vivid reminder of the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade and the enduring strength and resilience of African people. It stands as a powerful symbol of remembrance and hope.
The event will feature a dynamic lineup of activities, including historical exhibitions and artifact displays, traditional food showcases, cultural performances by local groups, and panel discussions on reparative justice and African unity
These activities are designed to educate, entertain, and inspire dialogue on the need for healing, restoration, and forward-looking unity among African people globally.
This year’s PANAFEST and Emancipation Day celebration at Pikworo promises to be a deeply moving and insightful gathering, reinforcing the importance of honoring the past while collectively shaping a better and more inclusive future.
