Tragedy has struck the Balungo community in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region following the untimely death of two young boys who had just completed their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The two, both male students and residents of Balungo, were involved in a fatal motorbike accident on Tuesday, June 18, 2025, shortly after attending a “Pens Down” party in Lungo, a neighboring community. The incident occurred while they were returning home from the celebration — an event traditionally held by students to mark the end of the national exams.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, the motorbike the two students were riding collided head-on with another motorcycle coming from the opposite direction at high speed. The crash left the young students with severe injuries, and both reportedly died on the spot.
Their bodies were later conveyed to their families and buried the following day, Wednesday, June 19, leaving their loved ones and the wider community in a state of mourning.
Family members, teachers, and residents of Balungo have been left reeling in grief, with many describing the incident as a heartbreaking end to what was supposed to be a moment of joy and relief after months of academic preparation.
“It’s devastating,” said a resident of Balungo. “They were full of hope and dreams. To lose them just after they completed their exams is beyond painful.”
This latest incident has once again raised concerns over the increasing trend of unsupervised “Pens Down” celebrations among students and the use of motorbikes by underaged or inexperienced riders.
Authorities and community leaders have called for stricter enforcement of road safety rules and parental guidance, especially during such emotionally charged occasions.
