Environmental and Resource Management expert Dr. Justice Aduko has backed a proposal to name Ghana’s forthcoming plastics legislation after the late Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Dr. Murtala Mohammed, but says effective enforcement will ultimately determine the law’s success.
Dr. Aduko said passing the legislation alone would not solve Ghana’s plastic pollution problem without sustained public education, enforcement and changes in attitudes towards waste disposal.
Speaking in a telephone interview on Bolga FM’s News at 6:30, he said naming the legislation after the late minister would be a fitting recognition of his contribution to environmental protection and sanitation in Ghana.
According to Dr. Aduko, Dr. Mohammed demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing sanitation and environmental challenges during his time in office.
He said naming the legislation after him would preserve his legacy and serve as a reminder of his contribution to efforts to tackle plastic pollution and poor sanitation.
Dr. Aduko said the proposed legislation could also provide a framework for the government, environmental agencies, communities and other stakeholders to work together to address plastic waste and sanitation challenges.
He, however, stressed that legislation must be backed by practical action if Ghana is to make significant progress in reducing plastic pollution.
Dr. Aduko urged citizens to take responsibility for protecting the environment and support measures aimed at promoting responsible waste disposal and improving sanitation.
