The election, held on Friday, June 27, 2025, brought together nine community committee leaders representing 81 delegates. Six candidates contested the position, with Ayine Justice emerging as the winner after securing 30 votes.

He was closely followed by Adooh Michael with 22 votes, while James Ayambire polled 14 votes, Peter Azika received 6, Awine Asampana got 5, and Sule Afogtue secured 4 votes.

In his victory speech, Ayine Justice expressed heartfelt gratitude to the delegates and farming communities for their trust and support. He pledged to serve as a strong advocate for their needs and to ensure that the voices of farmers at the Vea Irrigation Scheme are heard at the board level.

“This is not just my victory but ours collectively,” he stated. “I will ensure that the concerns of Vea farmers are heard and addressed. Together, through shared knowledge and cooperation, we can push for the progress of this scheme.”

Managing Director of ICOUR, Mr. Dominic Anarigdi, who monitored the election process, praised the farmers for conducting a peaceful and transparent exercise. He encouraged them to continue supporting the company’s initiatives aimed at improving agricultural productivity and enhancing rural livelihoods.

“My purpose here is to work for your progress,” Mr. Anarigdi said. “I see you as partners, and I urge you to see me as a brother. Your insights and expertise are crucial in shaping policies that benefit all.”

The election is seen as a significant step in promoting farmer inclusion in irrigation management and decision-making. With Ayine Justice now representing the farmers at ICOUR’s board level, expectations are high for improved infrastructure, water access, and agricultural development under the Vea Irrigation Scheme.

Farmers expressed hope that the newly elected representative will champion pressing issues, particularly the need for reliable irrigation infrastructure and responsive agricultural policies.
