“Due process must be followed” – Former Talensi DCE urges EOCO to respect human rights

Thomas Duanab Wuni, former District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Talensi District in Ghana’s Upper East Region, has criticized the current bail conditions imposed on some arrested former New Patriotic Party (NPP) appointees, describing them as excessive, unfair, and politically motivated.

In an interview with A1 Radio, Mr. Wuni expressed deep concern over the treatment of former government officials, particularly those affiliated with the NPP, following their arrests and detentions by state agencies, including the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

He alleged that despite meeting the bail conditions, some detainees continue to face unnecessary delays in securing their release, suggesting a calculated effort to punish rather than prosecute.

“This is persecution. We can fight corruption with a more decent style than this. I see this to be a self-styled punishment for people,” Mr. Wuni stated.

According to him, the current approach to anti-corruption enforcement in Ghana does not reflect a sincere commitment to transparency, justice, and accountability. He stressed that the rule of law and due process must guide all legal proceedings, especially when it involves former public servants.

Mr. Wuni called on EOCO and similar investigative bodies to respect fundamental human rights while performing their duties. He argued that justice must not be administered in a manner that appears selective, vindictive, or politically biased.

“If they (EOCO) are doing well, they can go ahead and do their work, but they should respect the fundamental human rights of the people they are dealing with,” he added.

His comments follow the arrest and detention of Abdul-Wahab Hanan, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), along with other former appointees, sparking public debate over the fairness and transparency of ongoing investigations.

As discussions around corruption, accountability, and political witch-hunting continue to shape national discourse, Mr. Wuni’s appeal highlights the growing demand for non-partisan enforcement of the law and a balanced justice system.
