The Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga is set to launch postgraduate medical training in January 2026, marking a major milestone in the advancement of specialist healthcare services in northern Ghana.
Professor Richard Adanu, Rector of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, confirmed the development after assessing the hospital’s readiness during a working visit to the region. He strongly endorsed the facility’s capacity to support postgraduate medical education.
The training program will initially focus on four specialized areas: Pediatrics and Child Health, Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery, and General Internal Medicine.
Speaking after touring the hospital, Professor Adanu expressed confidence in both the infrastructure and the preparedness of the medical staff. “We are working towards starting the training program in Pediatrics and Child Health, Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery, and General Internal Medicine. Hopefully, we can look at starting one of them in January,” he said.
To ensure a smooth rollout, the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons will partner with external trainers from Tamale and Accra to augment local expertise during the program’s initial phases.
“We have looked at your place—the place is generally good—and I think we can start specialist training here. I will submit my report to the different specialties, and they will also come to do their final assessment. If all goes according to plan, we will get something started in January. And once the CK Tedam University Medical School becomes operational, this region will become a model in medical education and healthcare delivery,” Professor Adanu stated.
Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm, noting that it aligns with President John Mahama’s broader vision for expanding quality healthcare and medical education in underserved regions.
The postgraduate medical training initiative is expected to not only enhance the professional development of medical practitioners in northern Ghana but also improve specialist healthcare access for residents in the Upper East Region and beyond.
