In response to recent violence and rising tensions in Bawku, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have deployed 400 additional troops under Operation Maidabuuri II to restore peace and stability in the conflict-prone area.

The reinforcements, drawn from the Northern, Southern, and Central Commands, were officially dispatched on Tuesday 29th July 2025, as part of an intensified effort to quell unrest and ensure the safety of civilians.

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, addressed the troops prior to their deployment. He urged them to uphold the highest standards of discipline, professionalism, and integrity during their mission.

“You are representing the Ghana Armed Forces and the entire nation,” he stated. “You must operate within the rules and regulations that govern the military. Due monitoring will be put in place to ensure you maintain operational standards and do not compromise the mission,” he admonished.

Operation Maidabuuri II was initiated as a strategic intervention by the military to help restore peace in Bawku, which has witnessed intermittent violence fueled by ethnic tensions and criminal activity.

The reinforcement brings fresh momentum to the peacekeeping initiative, which has been ongoing in the region for several months. The Ghana Armed Forces emphasized that the presence of these troops is not only to provide security but also to foster trust between the military and the civilian population.
