Residents of the Nyariga community in the Bolgatanga Municipality are living in fear and uncertainty following a violent robbery that left one person dead in the early hours of Friday, August 1, 2025.
The victim, identified as Ayine Junior Akubire, was reportedly shot and killed by four armed men disguised as military personnel while returning home from Bolgatanga town with his friend, Anaba Aloko.
According to Joseph Ayamga, Assembly Member for the Nyariga Electoral Area, the attack occurred around 2:00 a.m. near the Nyariga junction. The alleged robbers accosted the pair, disarmed them of an AK-47 rifle, and opened fire as the two attempted to flee in different directions.
“Ayine was hit during the chaos and was later found lifeless near the Nyariga market,” Mr. Ayamga told A1 News.
He expressed deep concern over the increasing insecurity in the Bolgatanga area, blaming the lack of street lighting and inadequate police patrols for the vulnerability of residents.
“There’s panic and fear in the community. The stretch from Zaare to Nyariga junction is in total darkness. We are appealing to authorities to come to our aid,” Mr. Ayamga pleaded.
The Bolgatanga Divisional Police Command has since transported the body of the deceased to the Upper East Regional Hospital morgue and has launched a full-scale investigation into the robbery. Efforts are underway to apprehend the suspects and determine the motive behind the attack.
The Nyariga community is calling for urgent intervention from the government and security agencies. Residents are demanding the installation of streetlights, improved security patrols, and a more visible police presence to prevent future tragedies.
This incident adds to a growing list of violent crimes in the Upper East Region, intensifying public calls for better protection and faster responses to security threats.
