Peter Ayinbisa, the current Upper East Regional Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed surprise at the manner in which his friend, Johnson Ayine, announced his intention to contest the position he currently occupies.

In an exclusive interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Ayinbisa revealed that he was never officially informed by Mr. Ayine about his plans to run for the post until the news became public.

“I saw it on social media the very night the party officially declared the position contestable. Johnson has been a supportive friend—when I was DCE and even when I was the parliamentary candidate. I expected that we could have sat down to discuss it,” he said.

He added that although he was later informed Mr. Ayine had attempted to reach out through a mutual contact, the effort did not result in any communication.

“Maybe he tried. But the person he connected through didn’t reach me. So, who knows? We can’t say for sure,” he remarked.

In contrast, Mr. Ayinbisa cited the example of Dr. Samuel Akunka, who had earlier approached him to express interest in the role but agreed not to contest should Mr. Ayinbisa decide to seek re-election. He described Dr. Akunka’s approach as “honorable” and noted that he would have preferred a similar level of engagement from Mr. Ayine.

Despite his disappointment, Mr. Ayinbisa stressed that he bears no ill will. “This is politics. I don’t begrudge anybody. I think it’s good. We are on,” he said, indicating his readiness for the contest ahead.

Reaffirming his decision to seek re-election, Mr. Ayinbisa maintained that his track record, experience, and dedication to party work uniquely position him to retain the role.

He noted that under his continued leadership, the party could further strengthen its communication machinery, enhance its visibility across the region, and secure more parliamentary seats in the 2028 general elections.

With tensions rising and political strategies unfolding, the race for the NPP’s Upper East Regional Communications Officer is shaping up to be a contest of both loyalty and competence—one that could define the party’s direction in the region ahead of 2028.
