The Bolgatanga Traditional Council, together with Nabdam, Talensi, and Bongo—collectively known as BONABOTO—alongside key stakeholders including the Tindaama, Assembly Members, youth groups, and civil society organizations within the BONABOTO catchment area, held a conclusive press briefing on August 22, 2025, to announce the end of the Bawku conflict spillover into the BONABOTO zone.

The peace process included extensive stakeholder engagements with both factions, cautioning them against retaliatory killings and violent attacks in the area.

As part of the process, the Tindaama performed traditional cleansing rites after both factions provided the necessary items. The Tindaana warned that any defiance of the peace accord following the rites could invoke dire spiritual consequences.

“The Tindaana warned both factions that defying the call for peace after the performance of these rites would invoke dire spiritual consequences. He emphasized that both communities are deeply aware of the cultural significance of these rites and should therefore uphold the peace accorded,” the Council stated.

Addressing the media at the final stakeholders’ meeting in Bolgatanga, Dr. Esmond Agurgro Balfour, BONABOTO Regional Chairman, explained: “Both factions were instructed to provide the requisite items for the performance of traditional cleansing rites. The Bolgatanga Traditional Council duly received the items and handed them over to the Tindaama, who performed the rites accordingly.”

Dr. Agurgro further appealed strongly to both factions in the BONABOTO enclave, Bawku, and the country at large to live peacefully together for the sake of development.

“We strongly appeal to both factions residing within Bolgatanga and the broader BONABOTO enclave to live together peacefully as brothers and sisters on this shared land. Today marks the official conclusion of all processes and engagements aimed at ending retaliatory attacks in Bolgatanga and its environs. We reaffirm our commitment to continue hosting all communities in peace, provided our hospitality is respected and not abused,” he added.
