Founder of the Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies (MITDS), Professor David Millar, has lashed out at some media personnel over what he described as “hollow and ill-informed” comments on the proposed establishment of an airport in the Upper East Region.
Speaking on Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio, Prof. Millar said the arguments advanced by some journalists questioning the need for an airport in the region were both naïve and dismissive of the region’s development needs.
He questioned the narrow perception that flight ticket sales are the only source of revenue for airports, stressing that airports generate income through several streams, including cargo flights and the transportation of parcels.
“Sales of tickets alone don’t generate revenue. Cargo flights and parcel services also contribute significantly to revenue mobilization,” he explained.
Prof. Millar called on residents of the Upper East Region to rise above partisan politics and hold the government accountable for the promises made during the election campaigns.
He emphasized that most campaign policies and programs, especially under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were national in scope and could be leveraged to ensure equitable development in the region if citizens demand action.
Expressing disappointment, he cautioned media practitioners against downplaying the region’s right to infrastructural development.
“People, including respected media persons, should desist from such hollow statements and allow the government to do what is necessary for the Upper East Region,” he stated.
Prof. Millar urged residents to insist on fair treatment and the fulfillment of promises, noting that infrastructural projects like an airport could serve as catalysts for shared growth, investment attraction, and improved connectivity in the Upper East Region.
