After years of delays, controversies, and stalled progress, construction on the Tindonmolgo road has finally resumed, with the first coat of bitumen poured on the stretch between Zakari Base towards the Agaara Bridge.
The project, which was awarded to Katham Five Company Limited in 2019, has endured a turbulent journey. Work first commenced in 2020 but was halted when aggrieved women laborers in Tindonmolgo staged a protest against a subcontractor accused of diverting cement meant for the road to another location. The protest, which drew widespread attention, forced management to intervene and settle outstanding wages for workers.
Although construction resumed briefly afterward, the project stalled again—most notably after the 2024 general elections, when contractors pulled out their machinery from the site. This left the community frustrated, as the road remained a dusty and impassable stretch, worsening during the rainy seasons.
Speaking to A1 Radio, Project Manager for Katham Five Company Limited, Ahmed Nabia Yakubu, confirmed that works have restarted in earnest, with a fresh seal of bitumen already laid. He, however, declined to provide a timeline for completion, citing weather disruptions and the phased nature of the project.
“We are on it. This is the first coat, the seal, and the project is progressing steadily. The rains slow things down, so I would shy away from giving definite dates. But we are back—and back for good,” Mr. Yakubu assured.
He further explained that the road is being constructed in phases, with the current works marking phase one. Once completed, construction will move to the second phase, which links the road to the Bolga-Naaga highway.
On concerns about past protests and unpaid wages that rocked the project in 2020, the Project Manager insisted he was “not aware” of such incidents but noted that relations with community members have been “largely successful” since resumption.
Residents of Tindonmolgo, who have long endured hardship navigating the neglected stretch, are expected to heave a sigh of relief as the long-awaited road finally shows signs of real progress.
