Talensi: Namoalug chief distances himself from youth demonstration, calls for unity

The Chief of Namoalug in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region, Namoanaab Kolsong, has firmly distanced himself from a recent youth demonstration in the area, stressing that allegations linking traditional leaders to the unrest are unfounded.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, the respected leader described such claims as “completely false” and an “insult” to his integrity and vision for Talensi’s development.

“I’ve heard about the demonstration and the accusations that some chiefs were behind it. For me in particular, that is false. Why would I encourage youth to demonstrate against entities that are here to help us? That’s not who I am, and it will never be,” Naab Kolsong stated.

The Chief explained that since assuming leadership, his focus has been on creating an enabling environment for investors, especially in the mining sector, to generate jobs and reduce poverty in Talensi.

“We were aware that this land is rich in gold deposits. Our aim was to attract investors to open opportunities for employment so that our people can improve their standard of living,” he added.

A professional accountant by training, Naab Kolsong emphasized that his decision to return to serve his people was driven by responsibility, not personal gain.

He noted that he had raised his own children to pursue education, with many now holding advanced degrees and occupying respected positions across Ghana. That, he said, motivated him to assume chieftaincy and use his knowledge and experience to uplift his community.

“So, to think I would tell young people to be disrespectful, to insult leaders, or to destroy their future with drugs and lawlessness is unacceptable. That is not the legacy I want for my people,” he said, visibly disheartened by the allegations.

Naab Kolsong called on chiefs, opinion leaders, and the youth of Talensi to set aside divisive tendencies and unite for collective progress.

“I’m not against the existence of youth groups, but they should find space to work collectively with traditional authorities for the greater development of our district,” he added.

Recounting an earlier meeting with the Paramount Chief, Tongo-Raana Kolbilsong Namalteng, he stressed that Talensi’s educated sons and daughters—including doctors, teachers, lawyers, and other professionals—must pool their expertise to champion development projects.

“It doesn’t matter where a facility is located—whether in Namoalug or another community. What matters is that Talensi as a whole benefits. If we are united, we can ensure companies and government agencies fulfill their promises. But if we are divided, we get less than what we deserve,” he noted.

The Chief underscored the importance of accountability in dealing with companies operating in the area, especially in ensuring that investments in infrastructure such as schools, roads, and hospitals are fully realized.

“If leaders work together, we can hold companies accountable. But division only weakens us,” he cautioned.

In his concluding remarks, Naab Kolsong appealed for peace, unity, and focus, reiterating his commitment to lead by example and to work with all stakeholders for the greater good of Talensi.

“Our community is blessed with resources and talents. Let us harness them together. Development cannot come through chaos—it can only come through unity,” he declared.
