The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kassena-Nankana West, Stephen Aeke Akurugo, has urged residents of the district to adopt positive attitudes towards waste management to improve sanitation in their communities.
Speaking during a massive cleanup exercise at the Kandiga market and its surroundings to mark this month’s National Sanitation Day, Mr. Akurugo stressed that while the assembly is committed to rolling out sensitization programs on radio and at the community level, lasting change depends on the mindset of the people.
“Even though it is a monthly activity, I charged every business person operating in the market and households to get dustbins so that whatever waste they generate can be put in there and disposed of properly at the dumping site,” he said. “At the end of the month, Zoomlion containers will be taken for proper landfill management. That way, every household, every shop, and every apprenticeship center will be kept clean.”
The DCE added that public education is crucial in ensuring residents embrace the needed behavioral change. “When we get the attitudinal change concerning waste management, it will complement the monthly cleanup exercise, and we will have a clean Kassena-Nankana West District. This is not just my priority but also the priority of the Regional Minister and the President,” he emphasized.
Mr. Akurugo expressed satisfaction with the level of participation in the Kandiga exercise, noting the presence of youth, the elderly, traditional leaders, security agencies, and the media. “If participation is good, it means people are buying into the sanitation campaign, and that alone is encouraging. The turnout here in Kandiga was massive,” he observed.
He disclosed that next month’s sanitation exercise would take place in Chiana, the western zone of the district, and called on assembly members to mobilize their electoral areas to actively participate.
The cleanup exercise formed part of the government’s National Sanitation Day initiative, which sets aside the first Saturday of every month for communal cleaning to promote environmental hygiene.
The chief of the Kandiga Traditional Area, Naba Henry Abawine Amenga-Etego II, commended residents for their participation and lauded the government for initiating the program to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment.
The well-attended cleanup exercise in Kandiga brought together key stakeholders, including the Member of Parliament (MP) for Chiana-Paga, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, security agencies, assembly staff, Zoomlion workers, traders, and residents of the district.
