The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in the Upper East Region has raised serious concern over the rapid increase in the number of drinking spots—particularly beer bars—within the Bolgatanga Municipality, warning that their proximity to major roads poses a growing threat to public safety.
According to John Quarshie, Regional Public Relations Officer of the NRSA, the situation has become alarming and is contributing to rising cases of drunk driving and road crashes in the area.
Between January and August 2025, the Upper East Region recorded 72 road crashes, resulting in 105 injuries and 45 deaths. Mr. Quarshie attributed part of these accidents to motorists who drive or ride under the influence of alcohol, often after drinking at bars located close to the road.
“It’s quite unfortunate that in Bolga, almost every five steps there’s a beer bar, and most of them are very close to the road. The moment someone finishes drinking, the next thing they do is get on a motorbike and start riding. Once that happens, their thinking capacity is altered, and that’s when accidents occur,” Mr. Quarshie said in an interview on Bolga FM.
He described the situation as “unfortunate,” stressing that the proliferation of beer bars along major roads has created an environment that encourages risky behavior and endangers both drivers and pedestrians.
Touching on the nonfunctional traffic lights within the Bolgatanga Municipality, Mr. Quarshie acknowledged the challenge but said authorities are working to restore them.
He urged road users to exercise caution and remain alert when approaching intersections with faulty traffic lights.
“We are aware of the situation, and efforts are being made to fix the lights. Until then, motorists must be extremely careful and observant,” he advised.
