The Nabdam–Tilli stretch of the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom road is becoming increasingly notorious for criminal activities, leading to the deaths of some residents, according to the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nabdam, Francis Tobig.
Speaking before the Parliamentary Committee on Local Government and Rural Development during the consideration of the 2024 Annual Audit Statements of the MMDAs, Mr. Tobig raised serious concerns about the growing insecurity in the area.
“There are some security issues along the stretch between Nabdam and Tilli in the Bawku West District. Criminals use that road for various illegal activities. Sadly, some lives have already been lost there. This is a worrying trend for our district,” he told the committee.
Beyond security, the DCE also highlighted the devastating impact of elephant raids on farmlands across Nabdam. He said herds of migrating elephants continue to destroy farms, leaving many farmers financially distressed and without means of livelihood.
According to Mr. Tobig, the elephants use Nabdam as a migration corridor, traveling long distances from Damongo in the Savannah Region, through Nabdam and Bongo in the Upper East Region, before crossing into Burkina Faso.
“A lot of elephants have invaded farms. People have invested significant effort and resources into their fields, only to return and find everything destroyed. This is a very sad situation in our district,” he lamented.
