The Assistant Manager in charge of Energy Efficiency Regulations at the Ghana Energy Commission, Hubert Nsoh Zan, has encouraged Ghanaian consumers to take advantage of the GH Certified Appliance App to verify the authenticity and energy performance of electrical appliances before purchase.

He explained that the app, developed by the Energy Commission, enables consumers to check information on energy labels and make informed decisions when buying appliances. Previously, energy efficiency labeling covered only refrigerators, air conditioners, and lighting devices, but the Commission has now expanded the scope to include 19 additional appliances to better protect consumers.

“What we require is that we advise a Ghanaian consumer to take advantage of the GH certified appliance app, which is the Energy Commission’s app, the GH certified appliance app.”     “Traditionally we had labels on fridges, air conditioners, and lighting devices. Now the scope has increased to 19 more appliances and we believe that we want to protect the Ghanaian consumer. We think that the Ghanaian consumer also deserves better to buy products that are efficient, durable, and quality, and they can make some savings in their pockets,” he said.

According to the Commission, the initiative seeks to ensure that Ghanaians have access to durable, high-quality, and energy-efficient products that can help them reduce electricity costs.

Speaking to Journalists at a day’s training held in Bolgatanga, Hubert Nsoh Zan emphasized the vital role of the media in creating public awareness on energy efficiency measures, incentives available for consumers, and the introduction of new environmentally friendly appliances with low global warming potential.

“We realize that the media is a very key stakeholder in carrying out the information that we have for the public, and so training them on energy efficiency measures, what incentives to look out for, and also introducing energy efficient refrigerators and air conditioners with low global warming potential is what the AGORA project is seeking to achieve.”

He pointed out that these efforts form part of the Abating Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Obsolete RAC Equipment in Ghana and Nigeria (AGORA) project, funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to promote the use of efficient cooling appliances and support national climate goals.

The Assistant Manager added that under the AGORA program, the Energy Commission continues to engage key stakeholders, particularly the media, to educate the public on energy efficiency and to encourage Ghanaians to adopt efficient equipment in their homes.

The one-day training for journalists took place on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Tap Hotel in Bolgatanga.
