The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Jacob Paarechuga Anankware, has made a passionate appeal to the people of the Upper East Region to put aside tribal divisions and work together for the progress of the region.
Speaking at the 4th Upper East Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards held at the Blue Sky Hotel in Bolgatanga, Dr. Anankware said tribalism has been one of the major factors retarding the region’s development, creating unnecessary division among its people.
“We have no region other than the Upper East Region. Let’s stop the tribal tendencies. Let’s stop those issues that have the tendency to destroy us,” he appealed.
“If two brothers fight, they’ll kill one another, and a stranger will inherit their land. I am pleading with all and sundry — let us stay united, for it is only in unity that development and prosperity will locate our people.”
Dr. Anankware, who served as the guest speaker at the awards ceremony, commended journalists in the region for their professionalism, resilience, and dedication to national development. He said their work has been instrumental in exposing corruption, promoting transparency, and holding public officials accountable.
“Your dexterity, zeal, and hard work exposed the criminal activities of certain citizens and led to the rejection of a particular regime that will stay out of power for not less than 32 years,” he said. “If not for your good reportage, we would not have known that millions of dollars were allocated for projects that never existed or that some projects captured as completed were never started. We salute you.”
The Deputy CEO further praised journalists for upholding ethical standards in their work and urged them to continue serving the country with integrity and patriotism.
“Never in the history of this country have you seen a government in power for over ten months without a single scandal. This is the first time, and we will make sure that with our 32 years in power, we will have no scandal,” he remarked confidently, adding that President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government are committed to resetting the nation’s development agenda with a team of young, capable leaders.
