As part of activities marking World Sight Day 2025, themed “Love Your Eyes,” the Bolgatanga Municipal Health Directorate on Thursday, October 9, organized a free eye screening exercise at the Jubilee Park.

The initiative sought to raise awareness about the importance of eye health, detect early signs of eye conditions, and provide free screening, reading glasses, and referrals to participants. In addition, attendees had their blood pressure checked to promote overall wellness.

Speaking to Bolga FM, Louis Tindan, Clinical Care Coordinator at the Bolgatanga Municipal Health Directorate, described the exercise as a major success, noting that turnout far exceeded expectations.

“Vision Action supported us with several pairs of reading glasses and medications to help those who needed them for proper eye care,” Mr. Tindan explained. “Cases we can manage here are being handled, and those requiring further attention are being referred to the Bolgatanga Health Centre (Aningazanga), Coronation Health Centre, Plaza, the Regional Hospital, or the Yorogo Eye Clinic.”

He added that the overwhelming public response demonstrated growing awareness of the importance of regular eye care.

“We initially estimated about 300 participants, but so far, over 600 people have gone through the screening,” he said. “We’ve managed to treat several cases on-site and referred others to the appropriate health facilities for further care.”

Some beneficiaries expressed deep gratitude to the Municipal Health Directorate for what they described as a life-changing exercise.

Martha Asabia, a fashion designer, said the screening had made a practical difference in her daily life.

“I’m so glad I came. As a fashion designer, I always struggled to fix thread into a needle and usually needed help. Now that I’ve received these glasses, I can do it on my own. For that reason alone, I’m very happy,” she said.

Another beneficiary, Tiewul Peter Claver, praised the organizers for their professionalism.

“The exercise was well organized and everything ran smoothly. The officers were friendly and cordial throughout. After my screening, I received reading glasses, and I’m truly grateful. God bless them for this effort,” he said.

Mr. Tindan encouraged the public to prioritize regular eye checkups and take proactive steps to protect their vision.

“Our health facilities are open, and professionals are always ready to offer care,” he advised. “Our eyes are the gateway to our hearts. When your eyes are affected, it becomes a burden on others. Just as we rush to treat a stomachache, we should give the same priority to our eyes.”

The event formed part of the Bolgatanga Municipal Health Directorate’s ongoing efforts to promote preventive healthcare and improve the overall well-being of residents.
