Renowned Ghanaian folk musician David Nbabila Atamina, popularly known as Prof Atamina, has died. His passing was confirmed by his management, OneDuniya, in a statement issued on October 20, 2025. He was pronounced dead shortly after 3 p.m.
Prof Atamina was celebrated as one of the leading voices of northern Ghana’s kolego music genre — a rhythmic, storytelling style that blends traditional melodies with contemporary social commentary. Through his music, he explored themes of love, morality, perseverance, and cultural identity, often addressing issues many others avoided.
“OneDuniya announces with deep sorrow and heavy hearts the passing of our beloved artiste,” the statement read. “Prof Atamina was an extraordinary musician who shared his passion and heritage with the world through African folk music.”
Known for his bold lyrics and charismatic performances, Prof Atamina became a cultural icon not only in Ghana’s Upper East Region but across the nation. His songs often reflected the struggles and beauty of everyday life, earning him admiration from both the old and young.
“He will be remembered for his timeless contributions to the kolego genre and his advocacy for African culture,” the statement added.
His management requested privacy for his family and team as they mourn the loss, noting that details of his funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Fans and colleagues from across Ghana’s creative industry have begun paying tribute to the late musician, whose influence helped preserve and modernize traditional northern music for new generations.
