The Upper East Regional representative in this year’s Ghana’s Most Beautiful competition, Asakia Hawawu Hanaan, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of the region for the overwhelming love and support shown to her throughout the competition and upon her return home after emerging as first runner-up.
Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Miss Asakia said she had expected a quiet return to express appreciation to her supporters but was taken aback by the warm and emotional reception that greeted her. She described the experience as deeply moving and far beyond what she had ever imagined.
“Personally, when I was coming home, I just thought, oh, I’m just coming to pay courtesy calls to people who supported me—and even to those who didn’t—because the journey is just beginning,” she said. “But when I arrived in the Upper East Region, I was taken aback. I asked myself, what’s happening? Is this all for me? Because I didn’t win the crown. I didn’t come home with a car. So what’s so special?”
She added, “I saw the love on social media, but I thought maybe it was just part of social media strategy—people trying to push me forward. But yesterday, I saw real love, and I said to myself, no, this is too much for me.”
According to her, the outpouring of affection made her realize how much people in the region believed in her and supported her, even when financial constraints made it difficult for many to vote. She acknowledged that the unity and commitment of her supporters played a major role in her success in the national competition.
Miss Asakia reflected on the strong faith and determination that guided her through the contest, saying divine favor and teamwork carried her through moments of uncertainty. Despite the challenges, the encouragement from her family, team, and community kept her focused and grounded.
She described her experience as one that strengthened her belief in collective effort and perseverance. Although she did not win the ultimate crown, she said the love and pride shown by the region made her feel like a true winner.
“For me, I don’t believe it was an easy journey. I believe the favor of God worked for me because, all of a sudden, people’s minds were being drawn to the pageant,” she said. “People came through for me and my team. There’s a saying: if you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go with people. And I believe I’ve come this far because my people were solidly behind me from the very beginning.”
