The Bawku Police Command in the Upper East Region has come under intense criticism after revealing its inability to arrest a 47-year-old man, identified as Sulley Fongo, who defiled two sisters aged 4 and 7.

The police claim they are aware of the case but have been unable to effect an arrest because they “do not know the man and do not have his picture.”

Residents of the area have strongly condemned the police’s explanation, describing it as “unacceptable and disappointing.” According to some community members who spoke to A1 Radio, the suspect, Sulley Fongo, is well-known in the community and currently lives in his house, moving freely every morning and evening.

“It’s shocking that the police say they can’t find him when everyone here knows where he stays,” one resident remarked.

Commenting on the matter, Lawyer Abdul-Jalaldeen Abdulai, the Upper East Regional Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), called for swift action to ensure justice for the victims.

Speaking on A1 Radio, he emphasized that the alleged act by the suspect is a serious criminal offense under Ghana’s laws and must not be treated lightly. “Defilement is punishable by law, and no one should be allowed to commit such a heinous act and walk freely,” Lawyer Abdulai stated.

He urged community members to support the victims’ family in seeking justice and to assist authorities with any information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest.
Meanwhile, the mother of the two young survivors has made a heartfelt plea for justice. Struggling to care for her daughters, she revealed that the ordeal has left them traumatized and in need of medical attention.

“I just want justice for my children,” she said tearfully. “We are struggling to feed them and buy medicine for them.”

The case has renewed public concern over police responsiveness and accountability in handling sexual abuse cases, particularly in rural communities.

Many are calling on the Ghana Police Service to intensify its efforts, protect the victims, and ensure that the alleged perpetrator faces the full rigor of the law.
