A renowned integrated energy company, ENI Ghana and the management of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority, SADA, have signed a cooperation agreement for the joint evaluation of development opportunities in the renewable energy sector.

The move is to particularly assess the technical and economic feasibility of a 20-50MW solar plant in the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone, NSEZ, of Ghana.

The deal was officially sealed by the Managing Director of ENI Ghana, Mr Fabio Cavana and the CEO of SADA, Mr Charles Abugre yesterday in Accra.

With more than 84,000 people and operating in 83 countries, operations of ENI span oil and natural gas exploration, field development and production, as well as in the supply, trading and shipping of natural gas, electricity, and fuels among other chemical products.

The sealing of this agreement however fits in the company’s long-term strategy, aimed at integrating its traditional business with energy from renewable sources, making the most of all possible industrial, logistic, contractual and commercial synergies.

The SADA zone accounts for about 54. 4 percent of the total landmass of Ghana and endowed with huge untapped potential in the area of solar energy.

The SADA was established by Act 805, 2010 as an independent and autonomous statutory corporation with a mandate to “provide a framework for the comprehensive and long-term development of the NSEZ”.

Speaking to Radio Ghana’s Isaac Asare, the CEO of SADA, Mr. Charles Abugre professed that SADA places high premium on this cooperation with ENI Ghana as it will not only benefit the people in the NSEZ but the country at large.

According to him, the pact will ensure skilled development in the solar sector with efficient power generation for irrigation and commercial agriculture.

This, he lauded, will further translate into job creation for the teeming unemployed youth.

He said job creation coupled with the promotion of agricultural and industrial development is at the heart of SADA because the authority exist to work towards reducing poverty and bridge the development gap between the Northern half of the country and the South.

ENI has been present in Ghana since 2009, where it operates through its subsidiary ENI Ghana. ENI Ghana operates the Offshore Cape Three Points development license, and the Cape Three Points Block 4 exploration license.
