Mark Kwasi Ahumah Smith, a journalist with A1 Radio in the Upper East Region, has been nominated for the 2025 edition of the Ghana Energy Awards, marking a significant milestone in his media career and positioning him as the only journalist from the region to receive this prestigious recognition.
The Ghana Energy Awards, now in its ninth year, has established itself as one of the country’s most respected platforms for celebrating excellence, innovation, and leadership in the energy sector.
The scheme honours individuals and institutions whose work drives progress in power generation, petroleum, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sector-wide reforms. It has become a benchmark for inspiring quality, sustainability, and technological advancement within Ghana’s evolving energy landscape.
Reflecting on his nomination, Mr. Smith linked the achievement to his participation in the Media Foundation for West Africa’s 2nd Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Fellowship.
“Last year I was fortunate to be part of the fellowship, where we were expected to drive conversations about DPIs in Ghana and highlight how these technologies affect our daily lives,” he explained.
One of his standout stories examined the use of the NEDCo app and how consumers interact with it, particularly focusing on how the company has leveraged mobile money, one of Ghana’s biggest digital public infrastructures, to simplify electricity purchases. “That story met the awards committee’s criteria, and I have been nominated along with five others. I hope for the best,” he shared.
The 2025 edition of the Ghana Energy Awards is expected to spotlight the innovations, challenges, and forward-looking strategies shaping Ghana’s energy future.
With nearly a decade of recognising industry excellence, the event continues to elevate national dialogue on sustainability, digital transformation, and energy resilience. Smith’s nomination not only highlights his personal commitment to impactful journalism but also brings renewed visibility to the Upper East Region’s contribution to national conversations in the energy sector.
