The Nyariga community in the Bolgatanga Municipality has received a library from the Center for Sustainable Rural Development (CESRUD).
According to Rex Asanga, Executive Director of CESRUD, the project began in 2003 with support from the Friends of African Village Libraries (FAVL), an American charity founded by Prof. Michael Kevane.
Mr. Asanga highlighted the importance of community libraries in providing a conducive environment for schoolchildren to study and develop reading habits, especially in rural communities where homes often lack study spaces and reliable electricity.
He noted that the library will help address poor academic performance in the area, citing factors such as inadequate study conditions, limited teaching and learning materials, and socio-cultural barriers. Asanga appealed to teachers and parents to encourage children to use the facility, saying, “Let’s help our kids develop the love for reading and a hobby at an early age, and they will go very far in their education.”
The Nyariga Community Library is housed in a building originally constructed by the Blessing Basket project as an ICT center for the Yariga Girls Junior High School. Asanga acknowledged the key roles played by the partner organizations in establishing the facility and their agreement to have it used as a library.
“FAVL is to provide funding where necessary for the rehabilitation and refurbishment of the structure. We are very grateful to Blessing Basket for agreeing to have this building used as the library. I also wish to express appreciation to Mr. Abdulai, the representative of Blessing Basket, who played a key role in securing this approval,” he said.
Representing Blessing Basket, David Azangbiok said the organization welcomed the addition of library resources to the facility because of its importance to learning and educational growth—areas that align with Blessing Basket’s focus.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Leslie Kansanga, Upper East Regional Manager of the Ghana Library Authority, said libraries promote education through reading and research. He advised students, parents, and teachers to make good use of the facility and expressed appreciation to the development partners for establishing it.
