President Mahama under fire over IGP’s two-year post-retirement contract extension

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team in the Upper East Region, Michael Adombire Atinga, has criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to grant a two-year post-retirement contract extension to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, calling it inconsistent with the president’s own directives.

Speaking on A1 Radio, the Bolgatanga Central Constituency Youth Organizer said the extension contradicts a presidential directive issued on April 2, which suspended contract extensions for public officers. He argued that the decision disregards other qualified officers within the police service who are due for promotion.

“It’s just simply saying that the president is violating his own orders. The orders you put in place, you have come back to violate. It’s like saying one thing and doing another,” Mr. Adombire said.

He questioned the performance of the current IGP, claiming that, compared to the standards set by former IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the police service under Yohuno has seen declining morale and weakened public confidence.

“The security situation is not good. Even with that, you are indirectly killing the morale of those in line for that position,” he said.

Mr. Adombire warned that extending the IGP’s tenure could disrupt succession planning within the service, denying opportunities for officers next in line.

“You, the one touting that you will give institutions the opportunity to work, are going in the opposite direction. So where lies the motivation for officers to keep working?” he questioned.

He further criticized the lack of notable achievements under the current IGP, saying the extension appears unjustified and may signal favoritism rather than merit. “What significant activity or policy has this IGP implemented that warrants continuation in office?” Mr. Adombire asked.
