A communications team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region, Michael Adombire Atinga, has questioned the president’s decision-making authority, stressing that such powers should have limits. He made this call following the president’s approval of a two-year contract extension for Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohonu.

Speaking on A1 Radio, the Bolgatanga Central Constituency Youth Organizer argued that certain presidential powers need to be reviewed and possibly curtailed. He believes recent decisions, such as the IGP’s tenure extension, do not reflect the broader national interest and instead raise concerns about favouritism.

Mr. Adombire suggested that the move appears to benefit individuals who may have previously served the interests of those in power, rather than aligning with principles of fairness, institutional integrity, or opportunities for progression within the police service. He indicated that such actions send a worrying signal about how key national appointments are handled.

“Some of the powers of the president should be limited because sometimes, you see certain decisions being taken and you realize that they do not truly represent the national interest. It’s just like somebody trying to favour someone to be there,” he said.

The IGP’s contract extension has generated widespread discussion across the country, with various stakeholders questioning the rationale behind the decision and its implications for leadership transitions within the security service.
