The Chief of Bolga Sherigu, Naba Aluman Apasinaba II, has called for stronger collaboration in addressing the effects of climate change in the Upper East Region. Speaking at the 53rd Naba Yesika Annual Festival, held under the theme “Climate Change Threat: The Role of Traditional Leaders in Mitigating Its Effects,” the Chief stressed that collective action from all stakeholders is essential in tackling the growing environmental crisis.
Represented by the Chief of Dorongo, Naba Akazire Afayure, Naba Aluman Apasinaba II outlined the severe impact of climate change on the region, including land degradation, drying water bodies and vegetation, declining soil fertility, and unpredictable rainfall patterns. He called for responsible land use, sustainable farming practices, and proper management of natural resources.
“As custodians of the land, we must guide our communities to adopt responsible land usage, sustainable farming practices, and proper nursing and nurturing of trees, as well as proper management of waste, water bodies, and sacred groves,” he said.
The Chief appealed to partners in climate action, environmental conservation, and community development to collaborate with traditional authorities and other key opinion leaders to find lasting solutions. He also urged government agencies, NGOs, and the private sector to work closely with chiefs and traditional leaders in the fight against climate change.
“We owe it as an irrefutable duty to preserve and make the environment safe for ourselves, our children, and generations unborn,” he added.
Speaking at the festival, the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Roland Ayoo Atanga, expressed the government’s readiness to collaborate with traditional leaders to combat climate change for the benefit of the environment.
