The Kassena-Nankana West District has recorded significant progress in implementing the government’s Feed Ghana initiative, with the formation of more than 740 farmer groups to boost crop production across the district. Additionally, 15 specialised groups have been established to support the Akoko Nkitinkiti (improved local poultry) project, which seeks to enhance livestock production and improve household food security.
District Director of Agriculture, Mohammed Bukari, disclosed this during the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration, where stakeholders in the agricultural value chain converged to honour hardworking farmers. According to him, the group formation strategy is central to improving productivity, strengthening extension delivery, and ensuring effective monitoring of the government’s agricultural programmes.
Mr. Bukari noted that the groups have already benefited from targeted technical training, routine field monitoring, and advisory support from agricultural extension officers. He said the commitment shown by farmers to adopt improved technologies reflects a strong dedication to supporting the Feed Ghana agenda.
This year’s celebration also saw 12 exceptional farmers receiving awards for their outstanding performance in crop and livestock production. The awardees were praised for embracing innovation and demonstrating resilience despite challenges such as erratic rainfall patterns, rising production costs, and pest threats.
In addition to the main awards, 21 participants were recognised for their contributions to the district’s agricultural growth. Two schools—Chiana Senior High School and Mother of Mercy Basic School in Sirigu—were also acknowledged for their active involvement in school gardening. The Directorate described the initiative as crucial in nurturing agribusiness interest among young people and strengthening practical agricultural education.
Mr. Bukari urged farmers to remain committed to the best agronomic and livestock practices, assuring them of the Directorate’s unwavering support. He emphasized that continuous collaboration between farmers and agricultural officers is essential to achieving sustainable food production and long-term food security in Kassena-Nankana West.
The District Chief Executive, Stephen Akurugo Aeke, assured the farmers of the government’s commitment to providing their farming needs to meet the food needs of the population.
