Two schools in the Kassena-Nankana West District — Mother of Mercy Primary School in Sirigu and Chiana Senior High School have been adjudged the Best Agriculture Farming Schools for 2025, celebrating years of commitment to practical agriculture, environmental sustainability, and food production.
The honour comes after consistent technical guidance and monitoring by the District Director of Agriculture, Mohammed Bukari, since assuming office three years ago.
Both schools operate thriving demonstration farms where pupils and students cultivate pepper, garden eggs, onions, tomatoes, and other vegetables. These farms serve dual purposes: they provide fresh produce to support the school feeding programme and generate income through the sale of surplus harvests.
Beyond nutrition and revenue generation, the farms have become key learning centres where students acquire hands-on skills in modern agriculture. A teacher at Mother of Mercy Primary School, Alanpow Raymond, expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the significant role the district’s Agriculture Directorate has played in motivating the pupils.
“The encouragement, training, and regular supervision from the Director of Agriculture have kept this initiative alive. Our pupils are always eager to work on the farm because they understand its value,” he noted.
Speaking during the district’s 41st Farmers’ Day celebration, Director Mohammed Bukari reaffirmed the department’s commitment to strengthening agricultural livelihoods. He applauded the schools for proving that agriculture remains a vital tool for youth development, community resilience, and food security.
He added that the directorate will continue supporting schools to adopt sustainable farming methods, tree planting, and agribusiness training.
The celebration also recognized excellence beyond the classroom. Twelve outstanding farmers were honoured for their exceptional contributions throughout the year, while an additional 21 individuals received citations for supporting agricultural development in the district. Awardees included both crop and livestock farmers who demonstrated innovation and resilience despite climate challenges and rising input costs.
The recognition of Mother of Mercy Primary and Chiana SHS marks a renewed commitment to building future farmers equipped with knowledge, discipline, and passion for agriculture—securing the district’s food systems for generations to come.
