The Member of Parliament for the Nabdam Constituency and Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Mark-Kurt Nawaane, has cautioned young people in the district against drug and substance abuse, warning that it poses serious and lasting health risks.
Dr. Nawaane delivered the message at the Pelungu Yagle Kuure Festival, held under the theme “Drug-Free Nabdam,” where he addressed chiefs, youth and community members.
He described the misuse of substances such as tramadol, cocaine, marijuana and other hard drugs as dangerous, noting that while some young people believe drugs enhance productivity or provide relief, the long-term consequences are often severe and irreversible.
“These drugs will destroy you,” Dr. Nawaane warned. “They damage the central nervous system, the stomach, liver, kidneys and other vital organs. The youth of Nabdam must be very careful and stop it.”
He explained that any relief gained from drug use is temporary and does not resolve the underlying challenges that drive people to substance abuse.
“When you take these drugs, you may feel some relief, but it does not last. The problems that pushed you to take them will still be there,” he said, urging young people to adopt healthier ways of coping with stress.
Despite the warning, Dr. Nawaane commended the youth of Nabdam for their hard work and contributions to agriculture, small-scale businesses and community development, describing them as vital to the constituency’s growth.
He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing health, education and job creation in the district, pledging to use his position in Parliament to advocate policies that improve living standards and create opportunities for young people.
Participants at the festival welcomed the message, reinforcing calls for collective action to promote a drug-free Nabdam and protect the future of the next generation.
