The Majority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku, Mahama Ayariga, has expressed support for the long-standing call to create a new parliamentary constituency in the Kassena-Nankana West District.
Speaking at the maiden Azuko Festival, held to mark the 10th anniversary of Naba Atogumdeya Roland Akwara III, Ayariga acknowledged the repeated appeals from the Chiana-Paga MP, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, for the district to be split to improve governance and representation.
“My brother, the Honorable Member of Parliament, has reiterated what has been a long-standing appeal — the need to divide this constituency into two. This is something I have known for the past 12 years,” Ayariga said.
He noted that promises to create a new constituency have been made repeatedly during past election cycles but have yet to be fulfilled, often requiring compromise from one side to allow another to benefit. “Unfortunately, term after term, we have not been able to live up to a promise that has been made so many times,” he said.
While stopping short of making a definite commitment, Ayariga assured the Chiana-Paga MP and constituents of his support. “Standing here, I cannot make a definite promise, but I want to assure you that I sympathize with you, I agree with you, I support you, and I will join you to fight for that cause,” he said.
The appeal for a new constituency comes amid concerns over the size of Kassena-Nankana West, which residents say has stretched administrative structures and limited effective service delivery.
The Azuko Festival, which celebrated the founder of the Sirigu community, also served as a platform for discussing development issues affecting the district.
