The Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has called for the recognition of the Alagugumbe Group for its instrumental role in supporting government efforts toward the construction of the Upper East Regional Airport.

According to her, the group’s commitment and selfless contributions to the airport project deserve acknowledgment and encouragement.

“What your group is doing is instrumental, and I want us to acknowledge them and encourage them to continue,” Mrs. Opare stated during a board and management visit to the proposed airport site in the Upper East Region.

She further revealed that President John Dramani Mahama is expected to visit the region in the first quarter of the year to cut the sod, marking the official commencement of construction works.

The visit formed part of a comprehensive assessment mission by key stakeholders in Ghana’s aviation sector to inspect the proposed site, engage directly with landowners, and express appreciation to them for voluntarily releasing their lands to the government at no cost for the project.

The delegation included the Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur; the Board Chairman of GACL and Member of Parliament for Builsa North, Mr. James Agalga; as well as other senior management officials from the aviation sector.

Rev. Arthur assured residents that the construction of the Upper East Regional Airport is no longer a distant dream but a reality, noting that government preparations for the project are far advanced.

He emphasized that all technical and administrative processes are being aligned to ensure the successful execution of the project.

Reinforcing this assurance, Mr. James Agalga urged the people of the Upper East Region to remain confident in the government’s commitment. “This airport is a reality, and the region must remain united and supportive to see it fully realized,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the Alagugumbe Group, its leader, Mr. Gabriel Agambila, reaffirmed the group’s unwavering commitment to supporting the project in every possible way.

He cited the group’s previous contributions, including its role in facilitating the establishment of the Passport Office in the region, as evidence of its dedication to regional development.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Donatus Atanga, expressed profound appreciation to the board and management team for the visit. He described the airport as the greatest gift the region could receive, adding that his ultimate joy would be to witness airplanes flying in and out of the Upper East Region.

He assured the delegation that his office, together with traditional authorities, landowners, and the people of the region, would offer full support to ensure the successful realization of the project.

Also present was the Regional Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Jonathan Salifu Abdallah, who expressed excitement about the progress made.

He described the current administration under President John Dramani Mahama as a working government with the Upper East Region at heart.

The visit has reignited hope and optimism among residents as the long-anticipated Upper East Regional Airport edges closer to becoming a transformative reality for the region’s socio-economic development.
