NDC’s Alfred Awuni calls NPP a ‘fake party’ over top-down restructuring

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth Organizer for Bongo and member of the party’s communications team, Alfred Awuni, has thrown his weight behind comments made by Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng describing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as “fake,” as the opposition party considers possible disciplinary action against the former minister.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr. Awuni argued that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s remarks reflect genuine concerns about how the NPP is managing its internal reorganisation. He maintained that effective political parties are built from the grassroots upward, not through processes driven from the top.

According to him, the NPP’s decision to prioritise the election of a flagbearer ahead of branch, constituency, and regional executives is unusual and undermines the party’s foundational strength. He suggested that the approach weakens internal democracy and deviates from established political practice.

“Have you ever seen any political reorganisation or regrouping that starts from the top to the bottom before? Have we ever seen that before? It takes a fake party, an incompetent party, to do that, because any political party’s strength is from the grassroots,” he said.

He further alleged that the strategy is aimed at protecting former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, whom the party is positioning ahead of its internal restructuring. In his view, securing the flagbearer slot first would allow the current leadership and their supporters to leverage that outcome in subsequent internal elections.

“They know very well that if they start from the branch, all those people who support Bawumia—or who support the current crop of leadership—will be approved. So, in that case, let us approve Bawumia first and use Bawumia as our case for running our positions. That is it,” he said.

Mr. Awuni also questioned why disciplinary action appears to be directed solely at Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, noting that other members of the NPP have previously made equally critical comments without facing similar consequences. He argued that singling out the former minister raises concerns about fairness and consistency within the party.

The NDC communicator concluded that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s comments should not be treated as misconduct, describing them instead as a warning about internal practices he believes are undermining the NPP’s grassroots strength.
