Relationship counselor Purepeya Ayamga, popularly known as Counselor Apurepeya has sparked widespread discussion after cautioning young people against rushing into romantic relationships without emotional and mental maturity.
Speaking on A1 Radio’s popular Love Affairs programme, Counselor Apurepeya stated emphatically that “a relationship is not for boys and girls but for men and women,” stressing that immaturity remains one of the leading causes of heartbreak, conflict and broken homes in modern society.
According to him, many young people confuse attraction with readiness for commitment, entering relationships without the emotional discipline, responsibility and communication skills required to sustain healthy partnerships.
“If you are not mature enough emotionally, financially and mentally, you should stay away from relationships. Love is not a game, and it is not for experiments. It demands patience, sacrifice, responsibility and accountability,” he said on air.
Counselor Apurepeya explained that maturity goes beyond age, emphasizing the ability to manage emotions, respect boundaries, resolve conflicts peacefully and make responsible decisions.
He warned that immature relationships often lead to jealousy, manipulation, mistrust, financial pressure and even domestic conflict, which can negatively affect academic performance, career development and mental well-being.
“When boys and girls enter relationships, they carry childish attitudes — unnecessary jealousy, selfishness, quick tempers and unrealistic expectations. But when men and women relate, they communicate, compromise and build purpose together,” he added.
The Love Affairs programme on A1 Radio has become a trusted platform for relationship education and open discussions in the Upper East Region, drawing a growing youth audience and community participation.
Counselor Apurepeya’s remarks have since gained traction on social media platforms, reigniting conversations about readiness for relationships, youth development and the role of guidance in shaping responsible partnerships.
